The Atmosphere of Karaiskos Farm

The farm is a vibrant oasis of green, surrounded by dense forests of chestnut and beech trees, yet meticulously organized into vegetable gardens and flower beds that burst with seasonal color. It feels alive and interactive, with the sounds of farm animals and the smell of wood-fired ovens creating a rustic, welcoming ambiance that immediately connects you to the land. Whether you are walking through the rows of organic herbs or sitting at the long communal tables under the trees, the atmosphere is one of shared joy and authentic Greek hospitality.

The Vision of Stefanos The story of the farm began with the vision of the Karaiskos family, specifically Stefanos Karaiskos, who dreamt of creating a space that would reconnect people with the land. In 2016, this dream became a reality as they transformed a piece of family land located 2km from Portaria into a functional organic farm. The goal was not just to produce food, but to create a “multifunctional” estate where the production process was transparent and accessible to everyone, from young children to international travelers.

The Gastronomy Festival A defining moment in the farm’s history was the launch of the Pelion Gastronomy Festival. This annual event turned the farm into the culinary capital of the region, gathering local producers, chefs, and thousands of visitors to celebrate the unique flavors of Pelion. It established the farm as a cultural hub, proving that agrotourism could be a driving force for the local economy and a guardian of traditional recipes that were at risk of being forgotten.

The Cooking School Recognizing the global interest in the Mediterranean diet, the family launched their signature Cooking Classes, which have become the farm’s most famous activity. These are not typical classroom lessons; they are hands-on workshops where guests walk into the garden to pick their own zucchini, tomatoes, and herbs before cooking them in the outdoor kitchen. This “seed-to-plate” philosophy revolutionized tourism in Portaria, shifting the focus from simple sightseeing to active participation.

Sustainability and Education Throughout its growth, the farm has remained steadfast in its commitment to sustainability and education. It operates as an open classroom for local schools, teaching the next generation about biodiversity and organic farming practices. The family has implemented eco-friendly systems for irrigation and waste management, ensuring that their footprint remains light on the sensitive mountain ecosystem. This dedication led to it becoming the first farm in Thessaly to receive official certification for agrotourism.

Karaiskos Today: A Global Destination In the present day, Karaiskos Farm is recognized internationally as a model for sustainable tourism. It has expanded its services to include accommodation in a traditional farmhouse and private dining experiences for groups. Despite its success, it remains a family-run operation where the owners are personally involved in every aspect, from tending the crops to welcoming guests, ensuring that the soul of the project remains authentic and grounded in the soil of Pelion.

The farm offers daily cooking classes where visitors learn to make traditional phyllo pies, spetsofai, and other local delicacies using ingredients they harvest themselves. For those looking to relax, there is a farm-to-table restaurant serving seasonal dishes, as well as a café offering herbal teas and homemade desserts. Additionally, the farm provides activities for children, including pony rides and archery, making it a complete destination for family outings in nature.
